On Wednesday, 12 February 2025, the Ministry of Economy (MH) of the Slovak Republic submitted a proposal to the Government of the Slovak Republic for the declaration of general economic interest (GEI), in order to ensure a stable electricity supply to BUKOCEL, a. s., in Hencovce. This approved measure addresses the threat of supply disruption, which could jeopardise the operation of the wastewater treatment plant and pose environmental risks. Deputy Prime Minister and Slovak Minister for the Economy Denisa Saková emphasised that ensuring energy stability is crucial for protecting public interest and environmental security in the region.
„By securing the electricity supply in this case, we prevent the risk of environmental damage. The wastewater treatment plant serves not only the company, but also the inhabitants of the village of Nižný Hrabovec. Until this situation is resolved, it is crucial to guarantee the proper treatment of wastewater," said Economy Minister Denisa Saková.
Východoslovenská energetika, a.s., Košice, the current supplier of last resort, will be required to continue supplying electricity to Bukovel even if the customer fails to fulfil the contractual conditions.
Key measures proposed by the MoE SR:
? Uninterrupted supply of electricity to BUKOCEL, as necessary, to prevent environmental and industrial risks.
? Maintenance of the wastewater treatment plant, which treats sewage water from the Nižný Hrabovec municipality and prevents the threat of leakage of hazardous substances.
