The project to build charging stations for electric vehicles on motorways is moving forward

The Slovak government has approved a project to build a national network of ultra-fast charging stations (UFC) for electric vehicles. The project will be implemented by the state-owned company MH Invest, s.r.o., which has been awarded funding from the Slovak Republic's Recovery and Resilience Plan, specifically the Sustainable Transport programme. The project aims to increase the availability of charging points for electric vehicles along motorways and expressways within the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T).
„This project is a significant contribution to the development of electromobility in Slovakia and will help us to fulfil our international commitments,“ said Denisa Saková, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy of the Slovak Republic.
The new project will significantly improve ultra-fast charging station coverage on motorways, ensuring the construction of at least 228 stations with a capacity of at least 300 kW for cars and 400 kW for commercial vehicles. These stations will be interoperable and accessible to all customers via international roaming platforms.
As the strategic coordinator and controlling authority, the Ministry of Economy will play a key role in ensuring the efficient use of funds and compliance with the objectives of the national electromobility policy. The state-owned company MH Invest, s.r.o. will implement the project, enabling dedicated operational management. This approach guarantees expert investment management and flexibility in the construction and operation of the charging stations.
The construction of the ultra-fast charging infrastructure is funded by Investment 4 of Component 3 of the SR Recovery and Resilience Plan, and is divided into two phases:
1. The fisrt stage: Construction of electricity capacity through regional distribution companies (Západoslovenská Distribúcia, Stredoslovenská Distribúcia and Východoslovenská Distribúcia). This phase will involve constructing high-voltage networks and substations at selected rest areas along TEN-T network corridors.
2. The second stage: involves the construction and operation of ultra-fast charging points by the state-owned company MH Invest, s.r.o. This company will oversee the implementation of the investment through concessionaires. This includes preparatory work related to securing the lease of land from the National Motorway Company and implementing the public procurement process for the construction works and services concession.
Concessionaires will be selected through a public procurement process in accordance with the Public Procurement Act. This will effectively minimise the burden on public finances while creating a competitive environment for charging service providers.
„As part of the TEN-T network, Slovakia plays an important role in international transport. The construction of UFC stations will strengthen its integration into the European charging infrastructure system and boost its competitiveness in green mobility," added Minister D. Saková.
By approving this project, the Government of the Slovak Republic is confirming its commitment to sustainable transport and to promoting the transition to alternative fuels. The construction of UFC stations is a vital step in modernising transport infrastructure and will greatly improve the quality of services for electric vehicle users.
