Today (31 March 2025), the Slovak Republic's Minister of Economy, Denisa Saková, will receive the United States of America's Ambassador to Slovakia, Gautam A. Rana. This diplomatic visit will focus on discussing the introduction of tariffs on car imports to the US, as well as other aspects of economic cooperation between the two countries. Immediately after this meeting, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy of the Slovak Republic will meet with representatives of car manufacturers with production facilities in Slovakia at the Ministry of Economy.
„It is crucial that we communicate clearly and openly that the planned steps by the US are not beneficial for either the US or Europe. At the same time, I want to declare that we are in very close communication with the automotive industry and will explore all possibilities to support it in these challenging times," said Denisa Saková, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy of the Slovak Republic.
On Thursday, 27 March 2025, the US President announced new tariffs on US car imports. Slovakia is set to be one of the countries worst affected, as the US was the second-largest export destination for Slovak car companies. The new tariffs will affect goods from Slovakia worth around 2.5% of our GDP. Minister D. Saková has already discussed this issue with all the car companies that have production plants in Slovakia. The Slovak Ministry of Economy is also actively communicating with its EU partners to promote joint solutions.
Other topics discussed included potential collaboration in nuclear energy and the future of small modular reactor (SMR) projects.
