Vytvorené dňa: 08.07.2025      Aktualizované dňa: 08.07.2025

Denisa Saková, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy of the Slovak Republic, attended the joint informal meeting of Ministers for the Internal Market and Industry (COMPET) and Ministers for Trade (FAC/TRADE) in Warsaw, the capital of Poland, on 3–4 February 2025. Discussions focused on the threat of US tariffs and how to align EU trade and industrial policy to strengthen global competitiveness in an increasingly volatile geopolitical environment. The meeting also addressed how to support the integration of candidate countries into the single market. Minister Denisa Saková emphasised the importance of strengthening strategic sectors, protecting European industry from the unfair practices of third countries, and reducing dependencies in critical areas.

„We need to focus on improving conditions for our industries, which form the backbone of the economy. This means tackling high energy prices, ensuring better access to raw materials, and reducing administrative burdens. At the same time, we must take all necessary steps to preserve the free movement of goods and services from the EU to world markets," said  Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy Denisa Sakova.

The promotion of the automotive, steel and chemical industries was discussed, paying particular attention to these industries, which are facing rising costs, competition from third countries, and the threat of tariffs in the USA. Minister D. Saková emphasised the importance of implementing trade defence instruments and ensuring a level playing field for European businesses. „We must protect our key industries from unfair competition and unreasonable trade barriers, and encourage innovation,“ the minister added.

The integration of candidate countries into the single market

During a working lunch, ministers discussed the integration of candidate countries into the EU's single market. D. Saková emphasised the importance of technology innovation centres and high-value sectors such as the digital economy, automotive industry, and renewable energies sources. "The integration of candidate countries into European value chains must be gradual but targeted. Slovakia is proof that EU membership brings growth and economic stability," she said.

The future of the transatlantic partnership

The final discussion focused on the future of trade relations with the US. Minister Saková expressed her support for a stronger dialogue with US partners, especially in the automotive sector and AI: "Slovakia supports fair and balanced cooperation with the US. However, it is essential that the EU stands up for its industries and ensures that transatlantic trade relations remain open and fair," Saková emphasised.

The meeting in Poland confirmed that the EU needs a robust industrial strategy to enhance the competitiveness, resilience and sustainability of European industry. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy D. Saková also praised initiatives that will strengthen Slovakia's and the EU's position in the global market.
