Slovakia and Austria to present joint position on US tariffs in Luxembourg

Vytvorené dňa: 08.07.2025      Aktualizované dňa: 08.07.2025

At the EU Foreign Affairs and Trade Council meeting in Luxembourg on Monday, Slovak Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy Denisa Sakova and Austrian Federal Minister of Economy, Energy and Tourism Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer will represent a common position on the tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump on imports of goods from the European Union. Slovakia and Austria support a united and strong EU approach on this issue.

"We deeply regret the universal tariffs announced by the US President on 2 April. As export-oriented countries, Slovakia and Austria's economies are significantly affected by this measure. It is crucial that the EU remains united, firm and resolute in promoting and protecting our values and interests. We will continue to prioritise a negotiated and constructive solution with the United States. At the same time, however, we support a robust EU response and will actively engage in Monday's discussions," said Denisa Sakova in a joint ministerial statement.

US President Donald Trump announced the introduction of tariffs on imports from countries around the world to strengthen the domestic industry and the US internal market. Under the new rules, imports from the European Union will become 20% more expensive, while tariffs on imported cars will reach 25%.

Slovakia and Austria have long advocated fair trade conditions and the minimisation of trade barriers in transatlantic relations. At Monday's meeting in Luxembourg, EU ministers will discuss the steps the Union could take in response to the new measures introduced by the US administration. Minister Sakova and her Austrian counterpart are in favour of a coordinated European Union response to protect the industries and economic interests of member countries.

The Slovak Ministry of Economy will continue to promote active dialogue with international partners, supporting solutions that consider the interests of Slovak businesses and employees.
