Turkey is ready to negotiate assistance for Slovakia regarding gas imports from the east

Vytvorené dňa: 07.07.2025      Aktualizované dňa: 07.07.2025

Turkey is ready to engage actively in negotiations on increasing gas imports from Russia to Slovakia via the TurkStream pipeline. This outcome was achieved during today's negotiations between Prime Minister Robert Fico, Deputy Prime Minister and Economy Minister Denisa Saková, and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Turkish Trade Minister Ömer Bolat.  Minister Saková also participated in a roundtable event today aimed at strengthening bilateral economic relations between Slovakia and Turkey. Organised in cooperation with the Slovak Investment and Trade Development Agency (SARIO) and Turkey's DEIK agency, the event brought together government institution representatives and entrepreneurs to promote collaboration in trade, investment, and technological innovation.

The event in Istanbul was another step towards strengthening bilateral relations and creating new opportunities in terms of trade, energy, investment, and technological innovation. Minister Sakova also emphasised Turkey's importance as one of the world's fastest-growing energy markets: 'Turkey is a key gas transit country from the East, and we welcome its willingness to negotiate a solution to the gas import problem in Slovakia.' Turkey also has huge potential in the renewable energy sector, with planned investments totalling USD 171 billion by 2040. Slovakia is ready to offer its expertise in nuclear and hydropower to support Turkey's ambitions to achieve the goals of the Net Zero initiative," said Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy Denisa Sakova.

During the roundtable discussions, several concrete projects were presented to illustrate the potential of bilateral cooperation.  The Heneken Group, in collaboration with Çelikel Aluminium, has invested 20 million euros in a state-of-the-art aluminium alloy plant in the Turkish city of Izmir. This greenfield investment is the largest Slovak foreign investment in Turkey in the last 15 years, demonstrating how Slovak expertise can support sustainable production overseas. Soitron Group, a major player in the ICT and cybersecurity sector, operates in Turkey through its subsidiaries Soitron Cybersecurity and Sekom AS. Its collaboration with Türk Telekom and Türksat aims to strengthen digital transformation and cybersecurity in the region. Tatravagónka Poprad, the European leader in railway carriage production with a 40% market share, is negotiating with the Turkish company KARDEMIR to strengthen their collaboration in railway wheelset production and Turkish product certification for the European market. Bratislava Airport (BTS) is discussing the introduction of a direct air route between Bratislava and Istanbul with Turkish Airlines, as well as potential cooperation in cargo transport and aircraft maintenance.

At the end of the event, Minister Saková emphasised the importance of personal contacts and mutual understanding in building business relations: „Today's event demonstrated the significant potential of our collaboration. The Slovak government and the Ministry of Economy are ready to support these initiatives at the highest level and create favourable conditions for new projects,“ concluded the minister.
