A working meeting held between R. Fico and D. Saková: We plan to build a new nuclear reactor under the state ownership

Slovakia will have on its territory another nuclear reactor. Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic Robert Fico and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy of the Slovak Republic Denisa Saková revealed the news on Monday 13 May 2024 after their working discussions at the Ministry of Economy of the Slovak Republic. The largest-ever nuclear unit is to be built at the site of nuclear power plant operating in Jaslovské Bohunice. It will have an expected output of up to 1,200 megawatt-hours (MWh), while current nuclear blocks operating across Slovakia reach the output of some 500 MWh.
Prime Minister R. Fico pointed to the benefits linked with using the infrastructure of the Jaslovské Bohunice nuclear power plant. “Slovak Republic has an interest in building, under the state ownership, a massive nuclear bloc with an output of up to 1,200 MWh. We want to use the existing infrastructure of the Jaslovské Bohunice nuclear power plant, as it will significantly shorten the period needed for licensing and will also enable to take adequate decisions, which would have, otherwise, lasted long years. We need to have a nuclear source that will not only be efficient, but also under the control of the State, empowering us to manage crisis situations,” said Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic Robert Fico at the press briefing.
“A new huge nuclear source is crucial for the future of Slovakia. I am very pleased to see that the idea of having an energetically strong Slovakia has turned into reality. Our experience from the energy crisis in the past showed us clearly that it is inevitable to have under the state control the strategic enterprises along with elements pertaining to the strategic infrastructure,” added the Deputy Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic D. Saková.
Discussions focused also on stable gas and electricity prices. Ensuring gas supplies to Slovakia was high on the agenda, too, mainly as regards the termination of the gas transit via Ukraine. As Prime Minister R. Fico stated, in collaboration with the Deputy Prime Minister D. Saková, all necessary steps were adopted with the aim of ensuring new gas supplies to Slovakia, for instance by alternative supplies from Azerbaijan.
D. Saková also confirmed that general subsidies granted to the households in connection with high-energy prices would terminate. She highlighted that Ministry of Economy of the Slovak Republic works hard on introducing more effective and targeted forms of assistance. “We strive to work out various energy efficiency programs intended for people and municipalities so that they can modernise their technologies and subsequently reduce their energy costs. We have to learn to save energy, too. Therefore, we will not waste public resources for granting financial assistance for heating hot tubs or swimming pools,” concluded D. Saková.
Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic R. Fico discussed with Deputy Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic D. Saková strategic parks, currently being prepared in Valaliky near Košice and in Rimavská Sobota and Horná Streda. This entails large investments coming to Slovakia and new jobs creation. As they both stressed, the top priority in this regard is the goal of increasing Slovakia´s economic growth.
